Counselling is a special type of psychotherapy. The treatment of mental illness and the attempt to cure their problems or illnesses through conversations with many types of mentally ill people is called psychotherapy.
The word counselling originates from the English verb 'to counsel. Which means giving advice. In other words, it is a method by which a person helps to overcome a problem or obstacle so that the person seeking help increases his personal excellence and overcomes the problem or obstacle to return to a healthy normal life or is able to adapt.
Is counselling only for the mentally ill?
In daily life, we are introduced to many types of counsellors and various counselling processes. For example, parents advise children, doctors advise patients, teachers advise students, lawyers advise clients. According to Carl Rogers, "Counseling is a series of direct contacts with the individual which aims to offer his assistance in changing his attitudes and behaviours." According to Webster's Dictionary, "Consultation, mutual interchange of opinions, deliberating to gather" means discussion, exchange of views and talking together.
How does counselling work?
Listening to the real problem or problem of a person who is mentally ill, upset or depressed or lost, helps to plan according to the real situation in a slow way. As a result, the person with the problem can deal with the problem in a proper way, reduce tension and maintain peace of mind, and the person begins to feel lighter in his mind and finds a way to solve the problem easily.
But it is difficult to fix one's behaviour, abnormalities and inconsistencies just by counselling. Problems can be solved by this method.
How many types of counselling?
Counselling is usually done in two ways.
- Face-to-face counselling (1: 1 counselling), this type of counselling is usually done by the counsellor face to face with the person.
- Group Counseling, this type of counselling is usually done by counsellors with 4-5 people or more in seminars.
